No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's records.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. In excess of 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements near the city's international airport is seen as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Local authorities confirmed no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the mission, in addition to multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.

Wider Perspective

Extensive security missions are regular in Brazil before major international events in the nation.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is scheduled in the northern city of Belem in late autumn.
