Folly and Regal Arrogance Sunk Andrew, and It Might Persist Yet

This episode commenced with a solitary photograph, perhaps the most consequential ever snapped of a member of the monarchy.

Present was the Earl of Inverness, standing closely beside a young woman, while another individual beamed knowingly in the backdrop.

Absent that snapshot, shot at a party in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the allegations of a teenager who stated she was trafficked across the ocean and obliged to have cursory sexual encounters with a individual of the monarchy?

A strange, revealing action by someone who had overtly asserted to have never known about her, claimed he could never have had intimate contact with her, and yet handed over a large amount of his mother's resources to resolve a drawn-out legal case.

Over a Decade of Disgrace

Against this backdrop, conversations of the monarchy acting firmly to cut Andrew off are misguided. This scandal has continued for the largest portion of 15 years since that photograph, and an additional image of Andrew ambling amiably with a convicted sex offender surfaced.

  • Arrogance: To what extent did his family members, perhaps even his parents, realize that Andrew was so presumptuous?
  • Problematic Connections: They must have realized, if his aides and the law enforcement were doing their jobs, that he had some deeply disreputable friends given he openly welcomed them to palaces.
  • Monetary Excess: If the household did not know about his sexual proclivities, they certainly knew about his extravagance with public money.

Journeys were documented in royal annual reports: helicopter transfers from the palace to a golf course and back again in time for lunch, private flights instead of commercial flights, all for the convenience of "Airmiles Andy".

Existence of Entitlement

Additionally the entitlement which expected subservience when he walked into a space or the extreme obsession about his honorifics used on his correspondence in letters to his friends.

He could get away with it while his matriarch, who unaccountably pampered him, was still surviving. The monarch did at least strip him of royal responsibilities and military positions in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, we now know, untruthful media appearance six years ago.

Latest Events

Merely in the last fortnight that events accelerated, following the publication of accounts giving more disturbing information of his actions and that of his companions.

Additional revelations have again revealed Andrew's belief that he could avoid being untruthful about his relationship with a notorious figure.

The public (and the media) were far more perceptive of the royal family. There was no one of any consequence to speak up for him, a result of all those years of arrogance.

Monarchical Concerns

The more astute family members recognized that. The key objective is to hand down the crown, if not as before at least complete and unstained.

They have spent the last 190 years trying to reverse the image of past sovereigns, showing they are useful, accountable and responsive to their citizens.

He was placing all that in danger in an era when deference and privacy is no longer adequate.

Aftermath

Ultimately, the well-known indecisive monarch was pushed more. There was no alternative. The institution had surrendered command of the narrative.

Now it is the loss of honorifics and the persistent and lifetime social disgrace that will pain Andrew most severely.

  • Reduction: Lowered to just Mr Mountbatten-Windsor
  • Past Example: The primary royal to surrender his titles in modern times
  • Naval Career: Particularly stinging given his service in the Falklands war

He remains a counsellor of state, on paper able to substitute for the monarch, and he is still eighth in line to the crown, but neither of these will actually happen.

Future Prospects

Will people he comes across still show respect to him? Might they still slip up and call him Sir? Might they say Mr,

Certainly, he is not withdrawing to suburbia, but to the royal family's extensive property at a monarchical property.

In that place, he will be supplied by the sovereign with one of the estate properties and given some type of personal stipend.

This differs from his former home, where he paid a token lease for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit remote, but even so it may not be adequate distance.

Unresolved Issues

Matters remain unresolved. There are still records in the hands of US Congress to be made public.

  • Governmental Scrutiny: Will legislators seek further action
  • Financial Investigation: Or investigate the misuse of public money
  • Legal Possibility: There may even be a criminal probe into his conduct

Possibly for the moment the reputational impact to the monarchy is contained. The message from the palace was evidently that the stripping of honorifics was what the king, and particularly other senior monarchical figures, sought.

Changed Stance

The cessation of pretence that Andrew was acting willingly. And, significantly, the brief announcement showed evidently that the institution were siding with the victim's version of incidents.

Additionally, for the initial instance they ultimately showed consideration for the affected individuals: "These actions are judged required, despite the fact that he persists in refuting the claims against him."

Ultimately it is arrogance, selfishness and indolence that will undermine the institution. In his foolishness, personal excess and venality, Andrew gives the impression never to have understood that lesson.
