Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unneeded gifts might be seen as somewhat rude – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders during her travels. This unusual assortment reportedly features objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date has not been finalized, but the aim is to hold the auction by year's end, with all funds raised going to various charities.
Storage Room Treasures
The presents are currently stored in a secure area on the upper level of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been sitting unused over a long period.
The full gift list is yet to be officially released, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was presented in parliament. The question raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
An International Array of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Political Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.
This unique auction symbolizes a novel approach to manage the state presents that build up during a political career.
